Mushroom Gummies
Mushroom Gummies are just the latest iteration of mushroom-based supplements to pop up in your local health and wellness store or online, but they’re a lot more convenient than capsules and powders. They’re easy to take, mess-free, and come in a variety of flavors. But like all infused edibles, they take a bit longer to kick in than tinctures or sprays because they have to be metabolized in your digestive system before entering your bloodstream.
Four adults who were seen in the UVA Health medical center emergency room last September and November took the gummies on purpose; one child ate them accidentally. They all received treatment and were released, but the child required an overnight hospital stay. A lab test of the gummies found psilocybin, also known as’magic mushrooms’, in addition to ephedrine and kratom.
The Rise of Mushroom Gummies in the Wellness World
The gummies are sold under the brand name Uncle Frog and were made in the US. The company has issued a recall of two varieties, cordyceps and lion’s mane. Both products claim to promote “natural energy and power”. The gummies tested contained the mushroom Amanita muscaria, or fly agaric, but not the proprietary blend of mushrooms listed on the label.
Amanita muscaria is not regulated in the US as a scheduled drug, but it is an illegal hallucinogen. The FDA is investigating the outbreak to see if other ingredients in the gummies may be responsible. A lab test of the gummies from TRE House, an upstate New York company that sells fungi products, showed a mix of chemicals including psilocin.
